Curious Journeylist nominated for the Liebster Award 2017

liebster award

Only seven months after launching, Curious Journeylist has been nominated for his first award!  I want to thank Daniel Kiteski from Macedonia, a person behind the travel blog Passport Symphony who has nominated me for the Liebster Award 2017. Daniel is a backpacker and solo traveler who is trying to break the stereotype that for traveling you need a lot of money. I see why he has chosen me as his nominee, our way of traveling is quite similar. Make sure to check out his blog!

So, what is the Liebster Award 2017, anyway?

The Liebster Award is an award that has been given away to bloggers by other bloggers since 2011. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge their hard work and contribution to the travel blogging community and to show the support to the fellow bloggers. It is a great way for new bloggers to get discovered and grow their network.

The word “Liebster” in German means the sweetest, kindest, dearest, lovely, valued…

Now that I have been nominated, I should answer some of Daniel’s questions and nominate other travel bloggers who I think deserve this recognition. So, here it goes…

Daniel’s questions

  1. Which place left the strongest impression on you so far?

Nature impresses me more than cities do, and the place that left me speechless is definitely Grand Canyon. I have never seen something similar before and watching the sun goes down between the canyons was the most breathtaking thing I’ve seen. Although it was six years ago, I still have a vivid picture of that scene like it was yesterday.

  1. If you’re to settle in one city, which one would it be?

Uh, that’s a tough one. I’ve said for a lot of cities “I can totally imagine myself living here.” I think I could settle down in many places actually. But if I had to choose a city based on some criteria like climate, food, cost of living, culture and good vibes I think it would be Barcelona because it has the best from everything, at least for me.

Barcelona

  1. What made you want to travel the world?

Well, all the credits for that go to my miserable life at the time lol. I was never much of a traveler before, and when I was 23 I had some phase where I was quite unhappy. Just got out of 5 years relationship, I didn’t like my studies, and in general, I just had a feeling I need to go somewhere away. I applied for work and travel program in the US and spent there four months. It was the best experience in my life so far, and I got hooked on traveling. And since then I never actually stopped.

  1. What was the most extreme thing you did during your trips?

Hmm…maybe sleeping in the Central Park in NYC because we didn’t have money for any accommodation. Or going to the airport without the idea where to go and just taking the first flight. Or…actually this is enough. 😊

  1. What’s the happiest memory of your trips?

There are so many happy memories and moments I will always remember. But probably the most important for me was the moment of realization how free and happy I am while I was drinking a beer on the porch of a friend’s house in Rhode Island and blabbering about life. It was my first big solo travel, and I have never felt so strong and independent, without a worry on my mind. It is nothing special about that situation but the feeling I had that everything was possible was so thrilling.

  1. If you had had the power what would be the first thing you’d change in this world?

Discrimination. I think no one should be treated differently just because of their race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation or anything they didn’t choose or had a control over it. If you want to discriminate then discriminate stupidity, narrow-mindedness or I don’t know…bad taste in music?

  1. Beach or mountains? Why?

Beach. It is easier to reach.

  1. Which travel blogger do you want to have a beer with?

With Matthew Kepnes, more known as Nomadic Matt. He definitely deserves the title of the world’s best travel blogger. I am following him since I started traveling more seriously and I have found many, many useful tips on his blog.  I also think he is a cool guy who has a similar way of traveling as I do and I’m sure we could talk for hours.

  1. Why did you start blogging?

I never actually thought of having a blog. In 2016 there was a competition for the best travel story organized by the agency STA putovanja. The price was an airplane ticket to Dubai, New York or Thailand. At that time, I was already planning a trip to Thailand and thought why not give it a try. I have applied last minute with the story about how our generation changed the way of traveling. Me and two other people won the competition among 500 contestants. I received super positive comments about this blog, and the agency offered me to write for them in future and get paid. Just the thought someone not only wants to read what I have to say but also pay me for that was super exciting. That’s how I started writing, and one year later I decided to start my own travel blog.

  1. What’s your favorite travel book/travel movie?

“The Beach” by Alex Garland is probably my favorite travel book. It is a story about young backpackers in search of a utopian life which they thought they found on one hidden beach in Thailand.  There is also a movie adaptation of the book with Leonardo DiCaprio, but it’s not as nearly good as the book. The best part of the book are character’s thoughts and reflections, and that’s hard to show in the movie.

Nomadic Matt– my favorite travel blog

Every time I’m planning a trip I like to see what experienced bloggers have to say rather than reading Trip Advisor or official guides. Bloggers write from their personal experience and give you some valuable tips that you will not find in magazines or tour guides.

Nomadic Matt is probably the most famous travel blogger in the world and if you ask me, he has definitely deserved that title. He is a full-time traveler for more than ten years so on his blog you can find tips for almost every destination in the world. Matt writes very informative articles and gives practical advice on how traveling doesn’t have to be expensive and how everyone can afford it with just a little bit of planning, organization, and research.

Matt has also written a book How to Travel the World on $50 a Day which I think it should be a must-read for all the budget travelers. I admire his way of storytelling because he always keeps it simple, straight to the point and interesting.  Matt is also not one of the bloggers who is mysterious about how he become successful and who will give you some general answers that don’t really help anyone. In contrary, it seems like his mission is to prove that everyone can do what he does if they want to. Except writing for travelers he also writes for travel bloggers.  Matt and his partners are even running an online travel media school to teach you about blogging, writing, and photography.

My nominees for the Liebster Award 2017

Sometimes it can seem that there are as many travel bloggers as travelers. In that jungle of bloggers and new posts every day it is hard to know who or what to read, I know. Most of the time we choose to read articles only from established portals or famous bloggers guided by logic- if so many people are following- it must be good, right?  Well, yes and no.

There are many bloggers who are just starting their blogging journey and have lots of useful things to say to you and experiences to share. They will often be more authentic and honest because they have just started and want to build their reputation. There are few travel bloggers I am following since their beginning and who definitely deserve to be nominated because of their unique storytelling, amazing photography and humor. Some others I have discovered only recently and they have interested me enough to keep coming back to their page. So if you are looking for more inspiration, check out my nominees for the Liebster Award 2017.
